India will commemorate ‘Maitri Diwas’ or ‘Friendship Day’ on December 6, the day New Delhi had recognized Bangladesh in 1971.

“During the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh in March this year to attend the National Day of Bangladesh, it was decided to commemorate December 6 as ‘Maitri Diwas’ or Friendship Day,” MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said during his weekly press briefing on Thursday.

“We may recall that 10 days before the Liberation of Bangladesh in 1971, India had recognized Bangladesh on this day 6th December 1971. India was one of the first countries to establish bilateral and diplomatic ties with Bangladesh,” he stated.

In New Delhi, the Indian Council of World Affairs will be organizing a special event to mark ‘Maitri Divas’ on December 6 that would have participation from both countries.

He mentioned that 18 countries from round the globe besides India and Bangladesh will be marking ‘Maitri Divas’ – Belgium, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Russia, Qatar, Singapore, UK, Australia, France, Japan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand, UAE and USA.

The holding of the Maitri Diwas is a reflection of the deep and abiding friendship between the people of India and the people of Bangladesh that has been forged in blood and shared sacrifices, the MEA Spokesperson emphasized.
