Nepal seeks Modi-Oli meeting at BIMSTEC Summit

Nepal has proposed a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the upcoming BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, an official from Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed. 

A senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that Nepal has formally reached out to India with the request and is awaiting confirmation. “We’ve sent the proposal to the Indian side and are awaiting their response. There is a high probability that the two prime ministers will meet,” the official told ANI. 

Nepal PM’s Official Visit to Thailand 

On Wednesday, Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially announced Prime Minister Oli’s visit to Thailand for the sixth edition of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit, to be held in Bangkok on April 4. 

“Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is paying an official visit to the Kingdom of Thailand from April 1 to April 5, 2025, at the cordial invitation of the Prime Minister of Thailand, Paetongtarn Shinawatra. This marks the first official visit by a Nepali Prime Minister to Thailand,” the statement read. 

During his visit, PM Oli will hold official talks with his Thai counterpart, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, focusing on strengthening Nepal-Thailand bilateral relations. The discussions will cover trade, investment, tourism, and other areas of mutual interest. 

BIMSTEC Summit & High-Level Meetings 

Following the bilateral talks, PM Oli will lead the Nepali delegation at the BIMSTEC Summit and address the gathering on April 4. Nepal’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that the Prime Minister is scheduled to hold meetings with leaders of BIMSTEC member states, including potential high-level engagements with regional counterparts. 

The official delegation accompanying PM Oli will include Minister for Foreign Affairs Arzu Rana Deuba, Chief Advisor Bishnu Prasad Rimal, Economic and Development Advisor Yuba Raj Khatiwada, along with senior government officials and representatives from the private sector. 

As per the ministry, PM Oli will return to Nepal on April 5, 2025.
