Britain’s Railway to Celebrate 30 Years of DDLJ

The DDLJ Musical at the Manchester Opera House on May 29, 2025. Directed by Aditya Chopra, the stage adaptation will run until June 21 and promises to bring a fresh take on the beloved love story.

As part of its 200th-anniversary celebrations in 2025, Britain’s railway network will honor 30 years of the iconic Bollywood film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). The initiative is a collaboration with Yash Raj Films (YRF) to highlight love’s unifying power through a UK-India cultural celebration.

DDLJ, one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of all time, famously featured several scenes shot in the UK, including the iconic meeting between lead characters Raj and Simran at King’s Cross Station. The film, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, has held the record as the longest-running movie in Indian cinema since its release in 1995.
YRF will commemorate this milestone by debuting Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ Musical at the Manchester Opera House on May 29, 2025. Directed by Aditya Chopra, the stage adaptation will run until June 21 and promises to bring a fresh take on the beloved love story.

The musical, which features 18 original English songs, follows Simran, a young British Indian woman engaged in an arranged marriage in India, who falls for a British man named Roger. Music will be composed by Vishal Dadlani and Sheykhar Ravjiani, with the book and lyrics penned by Nell Benjamin of Mean Girls and Legally Blonde fame.
Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, expressed excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing that DDLJ is a testament to the studio’s global storytelling legacy. “We are delighted to partner with Railway 200. One of the most iconic scenes of DDLJ was filmed at King’s Cross Railway Station, which we are showcasing in Come Fall in Love. This is the perfect moment for us to celebrate this legacy with the UK audience,” he said.

In addition to the musical, immersive activations will be hosted at Manchester and London railway stations to celebrate the romance of train travel. The events aim to capture the spirit of Come Fall in Love and DDLJ’s enduring legacy.

Suzanne Donnelly, Executive Director of Railway 200, said, “We’re pleased to partner with Yash Raj Films and celebrate the enduring romance of rail and the power of connection across the world. The railway has long inspired filmmakers and shaped cultural narratives. This bicentenary provides a wonderful opportunity to honor this Bollywood blockbuster and its new musical adaptation.”
DDLJ, which translates to The Big-Hearted Will Take the Bride, continues to hold a special place in cinema history for its portrayal of love, tradition, and the beauty of train journeys. The 30th-anniversary celebrations will further solidify its timeless charm as it reaches new audiences in the UK.
