Delhi court reserves order on MF Husain’s paintings

Patiala House Court on Tuesday reserved its order on an application seeking FIR against the Delhi Art Gallery and its directors for displaying two controversial paintings created by celebrated painter MF Husain on Hindu deities. 

Delhi police informed the court on Tuesday that the said paintings portraying Hindu deities in a controversial manner by artist MF Husain have been seized. This was after the court had earlier directed the seizure of the paintings. 

In an application filed by the complainant for direction to the investigation officer (IO) to seize the paintings in question, the court had on Monday (January 20) directed him to seize the said paintings and file a report on Wednesday. 

On Tuesday, the court also considered the action taken report filed on behalf of the IO, the court noted that as per the report, the officer has already seized CCTV footage and the network video recorder (NVR) of the Delhi Art Gallery. 

It was further stated that a list of paintings was provided by Delhi Art Gallery in which the art pieces in question are mentioned. 

It was maintained in the inquiry report that the exhibition was held in a private space and the said paintings were only to display the original work of authors/artists. 

On December 18, the court allowed an application filed for production and preservation of CCTV footage from all the cameras installed at the exhibition gallery located at 22A, Windsor Place, Connaught Place, New Delhi. 

The investigation officer was directed to preserve the CCTV footage of December 4, 2024 between noon and 01.00 pm and produce the same before the court on the same date. 

The complainant in the case is a lawyer, Amita Sachdeva, who had earlier, through a social media post, said that she clicked photos of offensive paintings at the Delhi Art Gallery and also filed a complaint.
