BJP Ends 27-Year Drought in Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the BJP headquarters on Saturday evening to celebrate the party’s performance.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to return to power in Delhi after 27 years, as early trends show the party crossing the majority mark in the 70-member Assembly.

Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva credited the victory to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governance model, saying the people have “rejected” Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership.

As counting progressed, BJP surged ahead on 48 seats, while the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) trailed with leads in 22 constituencies. With the majority mark at 36, the results indicate a major political shift in the national capital.

“People of Delhi have shown faith in PM Modi. It’s a huge victory for us,” Sachdeva said, adding that the Prime Minister will visit the BJP headquarters on Saturday evening to celebrate the party’s performance.

Jubilant BJP workers erupted in celebrations outside the party office, bursting firecrackers and dancing. Leaders, including Delhi BJP Chief Sachdeva and National Vice President Baijayant Panda, gathered to mark the occasion.

Sachdeva attributed the victory to a battle between “good governance and bad governance,” attacking the AAP’s handling of issues like contaminated water, poor sanitation, and infrastructure.

He accused Kejriwal and his party of corruption, saying key AAP leaders, including the Chief Minister, Atishi, and Saurabh Bharadwaj, were trailing because they had “betrayed the public.”

Polling for the Delhi elections took place on February 5, with a voter turnout of 60.54%. The BJP’s campaign, led by Modi, focused on alleged failures of the Kejriwal government, including pollution in the Yamuna River and the renovation of the CM’s residence. Modi had also coined the terms “Aapda” and “Sheesh Mahal” to criticise Kejriwal.

With the BJP set for a decisive win, Delhi’s political landscape is on the verge of a historic transformation.
