Kantara Prequel Wraps Filming

Shetty reveals that the film was shot over three years, with over 250 days of shooting and thousands of people contributing to the production

The much-anticipated prequel Kantara: Chapter 1, directed by and starring Rishab Shetty, has officially wrapped filming. To mark the milestone, the makers released a powerful behind-the-scenes video offering a glimpse into the film’s intense and culturally rooted production journey.

Production house Hombale Films announced the wrap on their official X handle, writing: “Wrap Up… The Journey Begins. Presenting #WorldOfKantara ~ A Glimpse into the making. #KantaraChapter1 has been a divine journey, deeply rooted in our culture, brought to life with unwavering dedication, relentless hard work, and incredible team spirit.”

The video showcases the scale, spirit, and deep cultural devotion that went into the making of the film. It features lead actor-director Rishab Shetty speaking emotionally about the journey. “I have a dream—to tell the story of my land to the whole world. Our village. Our people. Our beliefs,” he says in the glimpse video.

Shetty reveals that the film was shot over three years, with over 250 days of shooting and thousands of people contributing to the production. “This is not just a film. This is a divine force,” he says, capturing the spiritual and emotional weight of the project.
Filming began in November 2023, with the first look and teaser dropping on November 27. The upcoming action epic is set centuries before the events of the first Kantara, during the reign of the Kadamba dynasty of Banavasi. Shetty is expected to play a mystical Naga Sadhu with superhuman powers, promising a dramatic expansion of the mythos introduced in the original.

The prequel also stars acclaimed actor Jayaram in a key role. With themes rooted in folklore, faith, and land-based identity, the film is expected to resonate with audiences across linguistic and cultural lines.

The original Kantara—a pan-India blockbuster—earned widespread acclaim upon its release. Set in coastal Karnataka, the film explored tensions between tradition and authority through the story of a Kambala champion clashing with a forest officer. Its raw energy, rooted storytelling, and cultural authenticity won over audiences nationwide, including industry giants.

mong its most notable fans was Tamil superstar Rajinikanth, who personally called the team to applaud their work. He hailed Kantara as a “masterpiece,” prompting a heartfelt response from Rishab Shetty. “You are the biggest superstar in India and I have been your fan since childhood,” Shetty had said. “Your appreciation is my dream come true. You inspire me to do more local stories and inspire our audiences everywhere.”

Chapter 1 looks to build on this legacy, expanding the Kantara universe while delving into its spiritual origins. According to the filmmakers, the story is not just a continuation but a foundation—offering insight into the forces that shaped the characters and world of the first film.

Produced by Vijay Kiragandur under the Hombale Films banner, Kantara: Chapter 1 is slated for release on October 2, 2025—coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti. The makers promise a theatrical experience steeped in mythology, action, and regional pride.
With its powerful visuals, mythic undertones, and emotional resonance, Kantara: Chapter 1 is shaping up to be one of Indian cinema’s most ambitious prequels—ready to roar into theatres and hearts alike.
