India Sees 103% Increase in Internship Opportunities Since 2022: Report

In 2024 alone, internship postings grew by 23%, reflecting a consistent effort by companies to nurture young talent

India has witnessed an impressive 103% increase in internship opportunities over the past three years, highlighting a growing trend among businesses to focus on internships as a means to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry expectations. According to a report by Indeed, the global matching and hiring platform, the rise in internship postings from 2022 to 2025 underscores the increasing importance of hands-on experience in shaping future-ready professionals.

In 2024 alone, internship postings grew by 23%, reflecting a consistent effort by companies to nurture young talent. This surge in opportunities is largely driven by the growth of artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and digital transformation. Businesses are increasingly using internships not only to offer valuable real-world experience but also to identify and groom top talent early on.
Sashi Kumar, Head of Sales at Indeed India, explained that internships are more than just a way to fill resume gaps. “For young professionals, internships provide a powerful platform to sharpen their skills, gain hands-on experience, and explore emerging career paths. An internship isn’t just a checkbox on a resume — it’s a first real step into the professional world. The skills you learn and the experiences you gain shape how you navigate your career,” he said.

The report also highlighted regional trends, with Delhi, Karnataka, and Maharashtra leading the country in internship searches. These regions accounted for 7.2%, 6.8%, and 6.2% of the total internship search activity, respectively. This geographical distribution indicates a growing demand for internships across diverse sectors, with businesses in these regions actively seeking interns.

Internship seekers are expected to possess a wide range of skills. Communication skills top the list, with 31.99% of companies seeking this ability in their interns. Other highly sought-after skills include English proficiency (12%), analytical skills (9%), SEO expertise (8%), Microsoft Excel proficiency (8%), Python programming (7%), and familiarity with Microsoft Office, HTML, and JavaScript (6% each).
The report also revealed that the average monthly stipend for internships in India stands at Rs 25,432. However, cities like Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, and Gurgaon offer stipends that exceed the national average. On the other hand, cities like Chennai and Kolkata offer internships with stipends on the lower end of the spectrum.
In addition to stipends, several other benefits are attracting interns to various positions, including work-from-home options, flexible schedules, health insurance coverage, paid sick time, and cell phone reimbursements.

This surge in internship opportunities highlights a significant shift in how businesses approach talent acquisition, focusing on long-term growth and nurturing young professionals to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving job market.
