‘Conclave’: Edward Berger’s Gripping Tale of Power, Faith, and Intrigue

Director Edward Berger describes his latest film, Conclave, as a compelling fusion of power, faith, and the human condition. The film explores the enigmatic and sacred process of electing a new Pope, a ritual steeped in spirituality and political maneuvering.

Based on Robert Harris’s best-selling novel, Conclave delves into the complexities of this secretive event. Berger noted, “The film offers a rare glimpse into a centuries-old ritual that is both deeply spiritual and politically charged. It’s a story about power, faith, and the human condition, with themes that resonate far beyond the Vatican walls.”

At the heart of the narrative is Ralph Fiennes, who portrays Cardinal Lawrence, a conflicted figure navigating the clandestine election process following the sudden death of the Pope. His performance captures the tension and moral dilemmas of selecting a new spiritual leader amidst power struggles and intrigue.

Fiennes remarked on the role, “The script is a great read, filled with manipulative, dark figures engaging in dubious acts. Beyond the political machinations, for Lawrence, it’s about the gravity of finding the right spiritual leader.”

With a screenplay by Academy Award nominee Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Conclave masterfully weaves a story of political intrigue, personal secrets, and ethical dilemmas, offering a thought-provoking cinematic experience.

PVR-INOX will release Conclave in Indian theaters on January 31.
