These missteps can lead to a range of skin issues, from sunburn and oiliness to dehydration and premature ageing. Understanding what not to do is just as important as knowing the right steps. Here’s a closer look at some frequent skincare mistakes to avoid during the sweltering summer months.
The first and perhaps most critical mistake is skipping sunscreen. Despite being widely recommended by dermatologists, many people still underestimate its importance or fail to apply it regularly. The sun’s ultraviolet rays are strongest during summer, and prolonged exposure without protection can result in sunburn, pigmentation, premature wrinkles, and even skin cancer. Sunscreen should not be limited to beach days—it’s a daily essential. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and reapply every two hours, especially if you’re sweating or spending time outdoors. It’s a small step with powerful long-term benefits.

Another common oversight is the use of heavy moisturisers during hot and humid weather. While hydration is key, rich creams that work well in winter may feel too greasy in summer and can clog pores. This can lead to breakouts, especially for those with oily or combination skin types. The solution lies in switching to lightweight, oil-free, and non-comedogenic moisturisers. Gel-based or water-based formulas provide sufficient hydration without weighing the skin down. Products containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or aloe vera are particularly effective in keeping the skin fresh and hydrated.
Hydration, however, isn’t just about external moisturisers. A major internal mistake is not drinking enough water. The body loses fluids faster in summer due to sweat, and the skin is often the first to show signs of dehydration. Dry patches, dullness, and irritation are common indicators. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps maintain skin elasticity and promotes a healthy glow. Supplementing your routine with hydrating mists or toners that contain glycerin or rose water can also help retain moisture and soothe sun-exposed skin.

Exfoliation is another step that often goes wrong during summer. While sloughing off dead skin cells is essential for a radiant complexion, many overdo it, thinking more is better. In reality, excessive exfoliation—whether through scrubs or chemical peels—can disrupt the skin barrier, causing redness, sensitivity, and increased vulnerability to the sun. During summer, when skin is already exposed to more environmental stress, it’s best to exfoliate no more than once or twice a week. Choose gentle exfoliants with fine particles or mild acids like lactic acid, which cleanse effectively without causing damage.

Lastly, lip care is often the most neglected part of a summer skincare routine. The skin on our lips is thinner and more delicate than the rest of the face, making it particularly susceptible to sun damage and dehydration. Failing to protect your lips can result in painful cracking and persistent dryness. Just as your face needs sunscreen, so do your lips. Lip balms with SPF offer protection, while regular use of nourishing lip masks and exfoliating scrubs keeps them soft and supple.
Summer skincare doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does need to be thoughtful. Avoiding these five common mistakes can make a noticeable difference in the health and appearance of your skin. By prioritising sun protection, adjusting your products for the season, staying hydrated, treating your skin gently, and not forgetting your lips, you’ll be well on your way to maintaining a fresh, glowing complexion all summer long.
