Modi Opens Z-Morh Tunnel, Showcasing Engineering Feats in Kashmir

PM Modi inaugurates the Sonamarg Tunnel, a marvel of engineering enhancing connectivity between Srinagar and Leh. The tunnel promises all-weather access, boosts tourism, and supports strategic needs in Jammu and Kashmir.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Sonamarg Tunnel on Monday, hailing Jammu and Kashmir as a hub of world-class engineering marvels. The tunnel, a strategic and economic game-changer, enhances all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Leh while boosting tourism and local livelihoods.

Engineering Marvels in J&K

PM Modi highlighted the state’s engineering accomplishments, including the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railroad bridge, and the under-construction world’s highest rail lines.

“Our Jammu and Kashmir is becoming a hub of tunnels, bridges, and ropeways,” PM Modi remarked, adding that global observers are awestruck by the Chenab Bridge’s engineering brilliance.

Key Features of the Sonamarg Tunnel

  • Length: 12 km, including the 6.4 km main tunnel.
  • Altitude: Over 8,650 feet above sea level.
  • Cost: Constructed at ₹2,700 crore.
  • Benefits: Provides year-round access, bypassing landslide-prone areas, and enhancing NH-1 connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh.
  • Tourism Boost: Facilitates winter tourism and adventure sports, transforming Sonamarg into a year-round destination.

The Sonamarg Tunnel, along with the upcoming Zojila Tunnel (set for completion by 2028), will reduce travel distances from 49 km to 43 km and increase vehicle speeds from 30 km/hr to 70 km/hr.

PM Modi’s Vision for J&K

PM Modi recalled his earlier visits to Kashmir as a BJP worker and expressed pride in the region’s development. “This tunnel will ease the lives of people in Kargil and Leh and fulfill a long-pending demand,” he said.

He also emphasized the government’s commitment to Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, focusing on inclusive development through infrastructure projects like schools, colleges, and railways.

Strategic Importance

The tunnel enhances defence logistics for the strategically critical Ladakh region and strengthens socio-cultural and economic ties across Jammu and Kashmir.

As the Prime Minister concluded, he celebrated the region’s potential, saying, “This is the new Jammu and Kashmir, where every corner is brimming with opportunities.”
