Modi accepts Macron’s invite to attend AI Summit 

On February 10-11, France will host the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit, gathering at the Grand Palais, which will be attended by Heads of State, leaders of international organizations  

Official Spokesperson of India’s Ministry of External Affairs Randhir Jaiswal has said that French President Emmanuel Macron has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Summit, and India has accepted the invite. 

While speaking at a press briefing, Jaiswal said that India is also developing its own AI program. 

“French President has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Artificial Intelligence Action Summit and we have accepted their invite. We will update you about further details,” he said. 

On February 10-11, France will host the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Summit, gathering at the Grand Palais, Heads of State and Government, leaders of international organizations, CEOs of small and large companies, representatives of academia, non-governmental organizations, artists and members of civil society, a statement by the Elysee Palace said. 

Jaiswal also said that after Chinese startup DeepSeek shocked the world, India has their own AI program and are further developing it. 

“We have our own program and we want to further develop that and in that regard we are in touch with several of our partners with whom we engage on technology issues technology collaboration and we would like to further strengthen them,” he said. 

The government is going to host Open Source model like Deepseek on Indian servers soon said Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday.

“We are going to do this very soon. Already, the team has worked the details the servers are required? how much capacity is required? All those details have been worked out. We will very soon be hosting those open source models on Indian servers,” says Vaishnaw. 

This comes at a time when Chinese startup DeepSeek with their open source reasoning model R1 has challenged the narrative that entitles need access to large amounts of GPU for building frontier models. 

The Indian government is working on the portal from which startups and researchers can access GPUs. Through this portal, startups and researchers can access the highly valued GPUs necessary for training AI models at much lower prices.  

Earlier while addressing the 30th Conference of Ambassadors in Paris on January 11, President Macron had said PM Modi will visit the country. “France will be hosting the AI Summit on February 10-11. A summit for action, as we call it. This summit will allow for an international conversation on AI. There will be Prime Minister Modi, who will move up to a major visit in our country as we want to forge a dialogue with all powers on AI.” 

The French President emphasised the importance of AI as a global conversation, stating that it will include countries such as the US, China, and India, as well as, the countries from the Gulf, which have significant roles in developing and regulating AI technologies. 

“The US, China, and major emerging countries such as India have a key role to play, as well as the Gulf,” Macron said. 

The French Presidency further highlighted the importance of addressing issues related to disinformation and the misuse of AI, which are central topics for the summit’s discussions.  

Earlier, India and France held Foreign Office Consultations in Paris and agreed to expand bilateral partnership in areas of high-end technology sectors. The two nations undertook a comprehensive review of the progress made in various facets of bilateral cooperation, as outlined in the India-France Horizon 2047 Roadmap. 

During the meeting, the discussions encompassed key areas of bilateral cooperation including defence, civil nuclear energy, space, cyber and digital, Artificial Intelligence (AI), institutional dialogue mechanisms, and initiatives fostering people-to-people exchanges and cultural ties, according to a statement by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). 

In the press note, MEA stated, “Both sides agreed to expand bilateral partnership in the areas of high-end technology sectors. In addition, the dialogue extended to global and regional issues such as cooperation in environment, climate change and health, cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, trilateral dialogues, joint development projects in third countries and ongoing international issues and crises such as those concerning the situation in the Middle East and Russia-Ukraine conflict.”
