In a strong statement on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India will repatriate any verified Indian migrant residing illegally in the United States. Additionally, he vowed to tackle human trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals by traffickers.
Speaking at a press conference following bilateral talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, Modi emphasized that both nations share the same stance on the issue. “Any verified Indian who is in the U.S. illegally, we are fully prepared to take them back to India,” he said.
Earlier this month, the U.S. deported about 100 illegal Indian migrants, sending them back on a military flight to Amritsar. Reports indicate that India has agreed to accept up to 18,000 illegal migrants as part of the ongoing cooperation between the two countries.
PM Modi expressed his determination to address the root causes of illegal migration, highlighting the dangers of human trafficking. “We need to go beyond repatriation,” he said, referring to the traffickers who prey on vulnerable individuals, particularly children from impoverished families. He described how traffickers lure young people with false promises of a better life, only to exploit them once they reach foreign shores. “A lot of them are brought in without knowing why they’re going to the country,” he added, stressing the need to combat the exploitation of India’s poor and vulnerable.
Calling for a united effort to fight human trafficking, Modi emphasized the importance of collaborative action between the U.S. and India. “What we should do is make an effort to uproot them (traffickers) from within the system so that we can reduce or remove human trafficking,” he urged.
The Prime Minister also reiterated the broader principle that illegal migrants have no right to stay in any country. “It is not just an issue for India but a global one,” he said. “We are of the opinion that anybody who enters another country illegally has absolutely no right to be in that country.”
In addition to its efforts on illegal migration abroad, India is also grappling with the problem of illegal migrants crossing into the country from neighboring nations.
The discussions between the U.S. and India reflect a growing commitment to tackle both illegal migration and the broader issue of human trafficking.
