India drives education forward in Nepal

India donates 81 school buses to Nepal, bolsters education, disaster preparedness, and regional ties; parliamentary delegations engage on diplomacy, climate, AI, and humanitarian cooperation at IPU Assembly….reports Asian Lite News

In a gesture reflecting the enduring friendship and close cooperation between India and Nepal, the Government of India has donated 81 school buses to educational institutions across 48 districts of Nepal. The initiative, highlighted by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, forms part of India’s longstanding commitment to enhancing mobility, educational access, and development across the neighbouring nation.

According to the embassy, the buses have been distributed across all seven provinces, reaching districts including flood-affected Ilam, Jhapa, and Udayapur in Koshi Province, as well as remote areas such as Humla, Mustang, Sankhuwasabha, Darchula, Baitadi, and Achham. The contribution underscores the depth of India-Nepal ties and the continuous collaboration that spans decades.

This donation builds on India’s sustained support to Nepal’s education sector. Over the past three decades, India has provided a total of 381 school buses to schools across Nepal, demonstrating a long-term commitment to ensuring that children in both urban and remote regions have reliable transportation to access education.

India’s support also extends beyond education into disaster relief and crisis response. Following heavy rains in Nepal earlier this month, which caused widespread damage and loss of life, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and reaffirmed India’s readiness to assist. On October 5, PM Modi tweeted, “The loss of lives and damage caused by heavy rains in Nepal is distressing. We stand with the people and Government of Nepal in this difficult time.” He added, “As a friendly neighbour and first responder, India remains committed to providing any assistance that may be required.”

India’s role as a close partner in times of crisis reflects a broader history of bilateral cooperation. During the 2015 earthquake that killed nearly 9,000 people and the 2020 floods that claimed nearly 200 lives, India provided critical aid and relief, reinforcing the strong cultural, economic, and political ties between the two nations.

Beyond bilateral aid, India and Nepal are also engaging at the international level to strengthen parliamentary and diplomatic cooperation. On the sidelines of the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva, delegations from both countries discussed opportunities to expand economic cooperation, cultural exchanges, climate change action, and people-to-people connections. The Assembly, held from October 19 to 23, brings together lawmakers worldwide to deliberate on humanitarian principles, democratic governance, and global reforms.

Addressing the General Debate, Lok Sabha MP Anurag Thakur highlighted the importance of inclusive reforms in global institutions, stressing that UN Security Council reform must remain central. “Humanitarian principles form the foundation of our shared humanity,” Thakur said, invoking India’s civilizational ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family. He cited India’s record as a first responder to global crises, from disaster relief operations to peacekeeping missions, as evidence of the country’s commitment to humanity.

In other sessions, Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra showcased India’s use of Artificial Intelligence to enhance parliamentary transparency and functioning, and invited delegates to the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi. Patra also highlighted India’s fair trade practices and open economic policies as essential to building a resilient global economy.

Further contributions from Indian lawmakers included Sumer Singh Solanki, representing India at the Asia Parliamentary Assembly Coordination Meeting, and Aprajita Sarangi, attending the Executive Committee’s concluding session. Their participation underlined India’s commitment to advancing parliamentary cooperation, sustainable development, and human rights globally.

The combined initiatives—ranging from school bus donations in Nepal to active engagement at the IPU Assembly—demonstrate India’s holistic approach to diplomacy and development. By supporting education, disaster preparedness, and regional cooperation, India reinforces its position as a reliable neighbour and a constructive player on the global stage.

The donation of 81 school buses not only addresses practical needs in education and mobility but also symbolizes the enduring bond between the two countries. As India and Nepal continue to collaborate on humanitarian, cultural, and economic fronts, such initiatives are likely to foster greater regional stability and mutual growth, reflecting a shared vision for prosperity and partnership in South Asia.
