Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday morning in Koothattukulam, Kerala, at the age of 80, after suffering a massive heart attack during his routine morning walk. Odinga had been in the state for Ayurvedic treatment, accompanied by his daughter and close family members. Local authorities reported that the heart attack occurred around 6:30 a.m., and he was rushed to Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre, but could not be revived. His body was later kept at Deva Matha Hospital, Koothattukulam.
A Life in Service and Leadership
Odinga was a towering figure in Kenyan politics for over four decades. Serving as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, he played a pivotal role during a critical period of national reconciliation following the post-election violence of 2007–08. He was instrumental in implementing constitutional reforms and championed dialogue and inclusivity, emerging as a national leader committed to peaceful resolution and democratic principles.
Beyond his term as Prime Minister, Odinga was a longstanding opposition leader and the head of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). He contested multiple presidential elections and remained a central figure in shaping Kenya’s modern political landscape. He also held key ministerial positions, including Minister of Energy (2001–2002) and Minister of Roads, Public Works and Housing (2003–2005).
Cherished Friend of India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief over Odinga’s passing, calling him a “cherished friend of India.” Modi recalled their longstanding association, which began during his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat. In a message on X, Modi said, “He had a special affection for India, our culture, values, and ancient wisdom. This was reflected in his efforts to strengthen India-Kenya ties. He particularly admired Ayurveda and the traditional medicine systems of India, having witnessed their positive impact on his daughter’s health.”
Modi extended his deepest condolences to Odinga’s family, friends, and the people of Kenya. Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar laid a floral tribute on Odinga’s mortal remains at Cochin International Airport in the presence of his daughter, Kenya’s High Commissioner in India, and senior Indian officials. A Ceremonial Guard of Honour was accorded by the Kerala Police.
Repatriation and National Mourning
Odinga’s body was flown on a special Indian Air Force flight to Mumbai, where a high-level Kenyan delegation, led by Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi, received it. The mortal remains will be repatriated to Kenya, where the country has declared national mourning. Kenyan President William Ruto hailed Odinga as the “father of Kenyan democracy” for his lifelong fight against authoritarianism and his role in shaping the 2010 constitution. A state funeral is scheduled for October 19.
Enduring Legacy
Odinga’s legacy extends beyond politics. He was admired internationally for his commitment to democracy, social justice, and development. His efforts to strengthen India-Kenya relations highlighted his global outlook and personal dedication to cultural and humanitarian engagement. The former leader’s passing marks the end of an era in Kenyan politics, leaving a profound impact on the nation and on the international community.
