‘BJP ignored plight of UP’s sugar industry’

The Congress party has accused the BJP government of neglecting Uttar Pradesh’s farmers and failing to address the challenges faced by the state’s sugar industry. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh directed pointed questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the ongoing issues ahead of his rallies in Etawah and Dhaurahra.

Ramesh highlighted the prolonged neglect of the trauma center at Sitapur Hospital, which has been inactive for seven years, despite being established during the previous state government’s tenure. He criticized the BJP for endangering lives by leaving crucial medical facilities unused.

Additionally, Ramesh addressed the struggles of potato farmers due to price fluctuations, emphasizing Uttar Pradesh’s status as India’s largest potato producer. He questioned the fulfillment of the government’s promise to prioritize Tomato-Onion-Potato (TOP) produce, labeling it as potentially empty rhetoric.

Turning to sugarcane farmers, Ramesh criticized the government for ignoring calls to increase sugarcane prices, which remain lower than neighboring states like Punjab and Haryana. He noted the decline in cultivation area and warned of impending closures of sugar mills due to shortages and delayed payments to farmers.

Ramesh urged the Prime Minister to address these pressing issues and break his “silence” on the challenges facing Uttar Pradesh’s agricultural sector, which is vital for the livelihoods of millions in the state.
