Stars and Stripes fly again: US back at UNESCO

US First Lady Jill Biden participated in a flag-raising ceremony at UNESCO in Paris on Tuesday, marking America’s official return to the UN agency after a controversial five-year absence.

With the Eiffel Tower in the backdrop, the Stars and Stripes were hoisted to applause and the national anthem.

Before the ceremony, Biden emphasised American leadership in preserving cultural heritage and promoting education and science worldwide.

She expressed pride in rejoining UNESCO, stating it aligns with President Joe Biden’s commitment to restoring US global leadership.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay also delivered a speech, emphasizsing unity and strength amidst global challenges.

The United States had announced its intention to rejoin UNESCO in June, and the organisation’s 193 member states earlier this month voted to approve the return.
