India braces for severe heatwave, school vacations extended

It said there was an increased likelihood of heat illness symptoms in people who are either exposed to the sun for a prolonged period or doing heavy work….reports Asian Lite News

As scorching temperatures persist, India finds no respite from the intense heatwaves sweeping across several regions.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a recent notification, predicting severe to very severe heatwave conditions in multiple areas including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, Odisha, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and more. The country continues to grapple with the sweltering heat, with no immediate relief in sight.

In Odisha on Saturday, Sonepur recorded the highest day temperature at 45.6 degrees Celsius. Bhubaneshwar recorded the highest day temperature at 44.6 degrees Celsius, which was above normal by 9.7 degrees Celsius during the last 24 hours.

Due to the severe heatwave, several districts of Odisha on Friday recorded above-normal temperatures, which were 6-7 degrees Celsius higher than usual.

Meanwhile, the Patna District Magistrate on Saturday suspended all academic activities up to Class 12 in Patna due to the ongoing heatwave. The order will remain effective till June 24.

In Telangana, the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre has issued orange (severe heatwave) alert for few pockets in Telangana districts of Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Jagityal, Karimnagar, Peddapally, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal and Hanamkonda.

It said there was an increased likelihood of heat illness symptoms in people who are either exposed to the sun for a prolonged period or doing heavy work.

There will be high health concerns for vulnerable people like infants, elders and people with chronic diseases.

The Met officials advised people to avoid heat exposure, keep cool and avoid dehydration.

“Drink sufficient water even if you are not thirsty. Use ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, buttermilk etc. to keep yourself hydrated,” an official said.

On Sunday, severe heatwave conditions prevailed at isolated pockets in Khammam district and heatwave conditions prevailed at isolated pockets in Adilabad, Hanumakonda, Nalgonda, Bhadradri Kothagudem and Peddapally districts.

Due to the prevailing heatwave conditions in Bihar, the state is under a red alert warning, as per IMD’s daily heatwave guidance, issued on Friday.

In the wake of scorching heat, the Patna district administration has extended the summer vacation for classes up to Class 12. The schools will remain closed until June 24, NDTV reported.

Along with Bihar, several other states have extended their summer vacations as a response to the extreme heat. Jharkhand’s School Education and Literacy Department announced that schools in the state will remain closed for up to classes 8 until June 17.

On the other hand, schools in Goa, Chhattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh have also extended their summer vacation, it was reported.
