Khalistan Commando Force Chief Paramjit Singh Panjwar, wanted for terrorist activities in India, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Saturday during his morning walk in Pakistan’s Lahore.
According to the police, Panjwar and his guard were at a park in Sun Flower Housing Society in Jauhar Town when two assailants opened fire on them and fled on a motorcycle.
The gunmen shot Panjwar in the head, and he was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. His guard was also injured and later died.
Panjwar was designated as a terrorist by India in July 2020 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Pakistan’s intelligence agencies, including the Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI), Military Intelligence (MI), and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), are investigating the incident, and the area was cordoned off.
The killing is the latest in a series of incidents where terror operatives have been targeted outside India. In February this year, self-styled Hizbul Mujahideen commander Bashir Ahmad Peer was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Pakistan’s Rawalpindi.
In the same month, former Al Badr commander Syed Khalid Raza was killed outside his Karachi residence, while Kashmir-born terrorist Aijaz Ahmad Ahanger, who had joined the Islamic State (IS), was reportedly killed in Kunar province, Afghanistan.
An eyewitness told investigators that Panjwar and his guard were in the park at around 6 am when a gunman approached and opened fire on them.
The assailant fled to the gate of the society after the firing, where his accomplice was waiting on a motorcycle. Sources in the Lahore police said that the ISI would lead the investigation, and the crime scene was protected by the agencies.
Lahore police spokesperson Farhan Ali Sheikh declined to comment on the incident. Panjwar joined the Khalistan Commando Force in 1986 and later became its head before fleeing to Pakistan in 1995-96.
