Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, who on Wednesday pledged to continue protests against legislator Raja Singh over his remarks on Prophet Muhammad, has made a fervent appeal for peace amid demonstrations. Raja Singh – who has been suspended by the BJP- was arrested on Tuesday over the comment and released on bail within hours amid outrage.

However, the city has remained enveloped in tensions. On Wednesday, chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao visited the affected parts to review the law and order situation. The demonstrations – which continue – have sparked concerns.

Meanwhile, Owaisi late in the night posted a series of tweets, and made an appeal: “This situation is a direct result of Raja Singh’s hate speech. He must be sent to jail at the earliest. I also reiterate my appeal to maintain peace. Hyderabad is our home, it should not fall prey to communalism.”

About 90 protesting youth were released late at night, he added. “On my representation to DCP South, over 90 protesting youth from Shah Ali Banda & Asha Talkies have been released. AIMIM MLA Ahmed bin Abdullah Balala & our corporators have been working all night to de-escalate the situation. I have been in touch with them & police too.”

“In one case, police had used disproportionate force & barged into a home & detained 5 youths. This isn’t acceptable. They’ve been released on my representation. I asked our corporators to drop the youths back home,” he further wrote.

Amid tensions, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights on Wednesday urged the Hyderabad Police to register a First Information Report against people who made school children raise slogans against against the suspended BJP leader, news agency PTI reported,
