European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen will pay an official visit to India on April 24-25, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday.

The MEA said in a statement that this will be her first visit to India as the President of the European Commission. During her visit, the President of the European Commission will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

She will also meet President Ram Nath Kovind and other dignitaries. The President of the European Commission has been invited as the Chief Guest for this year’s edition of Raisina Dialogue and will address the inaugural session on April 25.

“India and the European Union share a vibrant Strategic Partnership which has been witnessing strong growth with wider and deeper cooperation in Political and Strategic, Trade and Commerce, Climate and Sustainability, Digital and Technology aspects as well as people-to-people ties,” the MEA statement read.

The India-EU Leaders’ Meeting in May 2021 set new milestones with the decision to resume trade talks and the launch of the India-EU Connectivity Partnership.

The forthcoming visit of the President of the European Commission will be an opportunity to review progress and further intensify the multifaceted partnership with the EU.

Meanwhile, the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is also visiting India to “deepen” the long-term partnership amidst the global economic challenges and “threats” from autocratic states.

The visit will commence from Ahmedabad on Wednesday, wherein he will meet with leading businesses and discuss the UK and India’s thriving commercial, trade and people links. This will be the first time that a UK Prime Minister would visit Gujarat, India’s fifth largest state and the ancestral home of around half of the British-Indian population in the UK.

The British Prime Minister will then travel to New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Modi on April 22, a statement by the British embassy here said.

The leaders will hold in-depth talks on the UK and India’s strategic defence, diplomatic and economic partnership, aimed at bolstering the close partnership and stepping up security co-operation in the Indo-Pacific.

In 2021, the British Prime Minister and Prime Minister Modi agreed on a UK-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, announcing more than $692 million in investment into the UK and committing to a deeper bilateral relationship across trade, health, climate, defence and security, and connecting people of the two nations.
