Sri Lanka on Sunday arrested a Chinese couple and a local for over LKR 14 billion in cryptocurrency fraud.

The Financial and Commercial Crimes Bureau of the CID has arrested three persons for committing massive cryptocurrency fraud amounting to around LKR 14 billion (USD 37,891,504), reported Sunday Island Online.

Police said that the scam was committed by a Chinese couple together with a Lankan identified as Lamahewage Shamal Keerthi Bandara.

The Chinese couple was arrested at the Katunayake International Airport, and a police spokesperson said that 8,000 people were scammed by these con artists, reported Sunday Island Online.

As per police, Bandara started conning people in 2020 out of an office set up at the World Trade Center in Colombo.

The three criminals deceived unsuspecting individuals by promising them high returns on crypto investments, reported Sunday Island Online.

The suspects had engaged in discussions with potential investors at various five-star hotels in Colombo and convinced victims to engage in the pyramid scheme fraud.

The suspects had created a special application for the scheme which showed investors almost five times the profit of their investments in cryptocurrency, but they were unable to enjoy the profits, reported Sunday Island Online.

Amnesty for armed forces deserters

Sri Lanka’s Defence Ministry has declared a general amnesty for absentees from the armed forces.

This would enable deserters to receive a legal discharge from their respective services, the Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

The period of general amnesty will be in force from November 15 until December 31, the Ministry added.

Security forces personnel who have been absent without leave on or before October 25 will be able to receive their discharge from military service during this period, Xinhua news agency reported.

Defence Secretary Kamal Gunaratne urged all deserters to visit the nearest security forces camp and take advantage of the amnesty. (ANI/IANS)
